Tears tracked down Mikey's cheeks as he closed his eyes. The little girl fitted in the palm of his hand.

Nick fell silent as he moved away. Slowly, he walked out the room, his head down.

Butcher stiffened and held his breath when he looked up and noticed Nick leaving the room.

Nick gave Butcher a false smile. It faded almost instantly.

"Is he..." Butcher took the fading smile as a bad sign so he let his question trail off. I already failed him. What more do you want?

The avian silently pushed open the door, watching the interaction.

Butcher looked down and muttered, "It's all my fault." I knew it. I should have followed him.

Are you sure? Butcher looked back up and over at Mikey in the doorway, realizing with horror what the man was holding.

Butcher wanted to reach out and take Mikey into his arms and carry him to the showers to clean him off and close his wounds back up but he couldn't because he was holding another man's baby. He still felt Nick's presence hanging in the air between them; he still felt like he was standing in the other man's shadow.

Butcher walked in and put the baby down on his bed, making sure the child was comfortable before moving back to Mikey. Why should I get to do what I want sometime? He pulled Mikey into his arms and held him close, not caring about the blood on his chest.

Mikey made a surprised sound, leaning around to cuddle into Butcher's chest.
