Nick looked up briefly as Butcher walked down the stairs, before returning his gaze to Mikey. "Everything's going to be fine."

Butcher watched Mikey and Nick for a few moments then turned his attention to trying to get the baby to smile or at least look a little happier.

Nick realised with a jolt Butcher wasn't going to come any closer. "I don't lie to you Mikey." He stroked his tangled mess of hair. "I would be if I told you you looked brilliant now."

Mikey raised an eyebrow and relaxed against the shade's body. He snapped his teeth.

Butcher sighed inwardly. I can't compete with that. He looked around to give them their space and wandered over to check on Mike and William.

"Yes Pinnochio." Mikey murmured, chuckling. Angel moved to lean her head on his knee.

"Shhh shhh," Butcher soothed the baby in his arms. I wish I knew what I should call you.

Nick raised his head to survey the room. His eyes landed angrily on Butcher. You should be doing this, not me. He turned back to Mikey. "C'mon, let's get you upstairs."

Mikey let himself be helped up the stairs, broken wing trailing behind him.

Butcher glanced up out of the corner of his eye when he heard Mikey move up the stairs. Should I follow, baby? They don't need me.

"Accident prone." Nick murmured, keeping a tight hold of him. "Angel's just as bad."

"Well, that's always good." Mikey sighed, clutching the backpack to his chest. Moving was slow.

I guess we could wait in the hallway... Butcher started up the stairs slowly, looking back at Mike and William. I hope they'll be okay.

Nick shephearded Mikey into the bedroom with a sigh.

Butcher hesitated at the top of the stairs. Now what?

The shade watched helplessly as Mikey started sobbing into his hands, staring at the bloodstained eggshell.

Tears blurring his eyes, Mikey picked it up and cracked it open. He stared at the perfectly formed child inside it. The baby was about the size of his little finger.

"He's got your... uh... whatever Nick is. Mother's just weird to say," Butcher whispered to the baby and leaned against the wall, slipping down to sit on the floor slowly. "But hey you can sleep in my arms, kid. I don't mind."

It was another little girl, Mikey saw instantly. She would have been beautiful.

"So what do you think," Butcher whispered to the baby. "Should I go peek in and see how Mikey is? Or should I wait and give Mikey some time with his first lover? Hope you never have to feel awkward like this, kid."
