"He can't do that William. I'm sure he wouldn't leave you somewhere all alone." Sisky turned her head to look at the wrist and frowned at the fact that the bandage was only made of toilet paper and laced her fingers through William's. "We'll have to put a real bandage on that."

William was still shaking. He needed someone's shoulder to cry on instead of Mike's; he was afraid that Mike would do something if he were crying again. He put a hand on his stomach. "I-I-I don't know what he'll do," he whispered.

"He won't put you away, William," Sisky rubbed the part of William's back that she could reach with her free hand. "I'll help you. I've been there for you before and I'll always be there for you." She smiled down at him. "He won't have a reason to send you away."

William was still trembling. "B-b-but he already does," he whimpered, a hand rubbing over his stomach protectively. It's like I've already fucked up their lives...

"William," Sisky sighed and tilted her older friend's face up. "How long did you have to live with Ryland?"

"T-two hundred and seventeen years," William murmured, burying his face in Sisky's shoulder.

Sisky let William bury his face again and hugged him. "I saw him do something horrible to Mikey and if he did things like that to you that whole time... Pain like that doesn't heal overnight. It changes you. It's hard to change and be normal again" Adam suddenly wondered if William had based Down and Out on acutal experience.

Mike didn't know exactly what was going on but he sensed William was unhappy. He sat on the first step of the stairs that led to the basement and held his breath, trying to listen.

William was still trembling. He pet his stomach as a few more silent tears streamed down his cheeks. "I-I tried so hard when I was with him to end it all. Nothing worked. And now I have everything to live for and it's all going to be taken away again," he whispered.

"It's not going to be taken away," Sisky rested her head against William's. "You're not going anywhere."

Mike frowned, understanding what they were talking about. He tried not the interrupt but found it very difficult.

William felt safe knowing that it was okay to confide in Sisky. He kept his face buried in her shoulder and continued crying, unable to stop at the moment. He kept both of his arms around his stomach. "This is all my fault," he whimpered.

"No it's not William. You'll get better. I promise," Sisky rubbed William's back.

Mike hesitated before walking down the stairs. Maybe Sisky was right, after all. Maybe William couldn't help it. He had been to drastic; they had to work on it gradually. "Nevermind what I said." He spoke with a weak voice. "I take it back." He looked at Sisky for some kind of approval.

William kept his face buried in the girl's shoulder, too afraid to move. He held still besides the fact that he was still trembling.

Sisky only stiffened slightly in surprise for a few seconds, afraid that any studden movements would startle William. She looked up at Mike with hopeful eyes and asked calmly, "How long were you there?"

"Not too long. I...it doesn't matter." He nodded at Sisky before kneeling down next to the two boys. "William, don't cry. I only wanted to help you. I was wrong. There won't be any hospital, Bill. Look at me."

William turned his head so that he was facing Mike, revealing his tear stained cheeks and red eyelids.

Sisky quietly watched, loosening her grip on Wiliam in case he wanted to move and petting her friend's hair.

"I thought it was the only solution. Well, it's not. It's something we need to work on together." Mike gently placed his hand on William's shoulder. "Having you stay away from me would make me sick, but I thought it was worth it to see you healthy and smiling again. But that's not it - that's not how it needs to be done, right?"

William nodded his head weakly, agreeing to whatever Mike said. He hugged Sisky.

Sisky hugged back and smiled. "Um do you want some time alone?" She looked down shyly.

"No, no," Mike answered, running his hand in William's soft hair. "I'll leave you two alone," he offered. He addressed Sisky. "You're doing better at comforting William than I ever could, it seems." He smiled sadly, blushing with shame.

William shook his head. "I...I kind of want to talk to Mike alone for a few minutes, if you don't mind. Then we can all meet upstairs and go find Matt," he said with a sigh, stroking his stomach with his thumb.

Sisky smiled and gave William a last little squeeze. She looked at Mike for a moment before scurrying up the stairs and towards the kitchen.
