William kept his gaze upon the floor. "We could always try to distract him. I can always work as the bait. I'm used to it. That's what I've been doing fo rhte past 217 years..." he spoke quietly hoping that Mike wouldn't get angry with him.

"217 years?!" Butcher looked like his eyes were going to pop out of his head if he opened them any wider. "TWO HUNDRED SEVENTEEN YEARS?!"

Mike rubbed his forehead, but couldn't refrain from smiling. "He looks great for his age, I know." He turned to William. "But using you as bait is out of the question. They want you killed, and I'm certainly not handing you back on a silver platter. Don't even think about it."

"You wouldn't be handing me back. You'd be teasing them with me. I can handle it. It's been what my life has consisted of," he said as he finally returned eye contact with Mike.

"What if he just kills you straight off?" Butcher asked quietly, looking from one of them to the other.

"Exactly. Who says he still wants you?" He hadn't meant to sound harsh, and hoped William had understood him correctly. "We're risking your life with this."

William returned his gaze towards the floor. Mike was right. Ryland wouldn't want him after the other night. They had planned to get rid of him. Who was he kidding? "If risking my life meant that Michael was safe, then I'd do it," he mumbled as he stared atthe floor, still afraid to look either of the men in their eyes.

"I'm sure Mike will figure out a way to keep us all safe or at least mostly safe," Butcher started fidgeting. "Do you think it's safe for me to go home or do you want me to stay here?"

Mike decided to ignore William, at least untill he could talk to him in private. He didn't want to discuss this with Butcher. "You're safe. They don't know about you yet, or at least not your affiliation with us. But you can stay here if you want to. My living room is all yours."

William remained silent and kept staring at the floor as he listened to the two men continue talking. He wished so badly that he hadn't dragged Mike further into this and caused him further stress. He had no one to blame but himself. He should have gone home to the clan. The only reason Ryland had to get a new mate was because William had left. And now he wanted his former mate dead.

"Thanks but no thanks," Butcher grimaced. "I'm gonna go home now, so if you need me call me, okay?"

He headed towards the door, unfurling his wings with a wince as he muttered to himself laughingly, "Save on gas at least..."

Mike courteously opened the door and smiled. We'd be damned if he wasn't on our side. He glanced at William, and suddenly felt bad. Next time he'd have to avoid telling him everything. There were some things William was better off not knowing.

William stared out the door as Butcher flew away. Still nervous of talking to Mike, William stood there, his eyes still cast down to the floor, his fangs biting into his bottom lip as they drew blood that William didn't notice.

Butcher looked back over his shoulder at the house until it was out of sight. He'd have to think about everything that had happened tonight in the privacy of his own apartment and wait for Sisky to call him.

Mike closed the door. He looked at William, and saw the blood on his bottom lip. He didn't tell him about it because it scared him. He did his best to pay no attention to it."My bedroom?" he asked, again hoping he wouldn't be misunderstood.

William smiply nodded and marched out into the living room, only stopping once to ask Mike a question. "Who's sleeping where again?" he asked in a somewhat hurt, sad voice.

"You're the guest so you get the bed. I'll take the bedroom couch." Mike didn't understand why William's voice was so full of melancholy. He wasn't mad at him. He had even learned to trust him again. What more could he want? He opened the bedroom door and walked in, glancing at the window to make sure it was closed.

"Alright," William said as he followed Mike into the bedroom. He went back to his place on the bed and climbed in. As he lay there, he kept his eyes glued to the window as his head reeled in thoughts.

Mike sat on the couch and took his shirt off before laying down. He knew he couldn't wait any longer to talk to William about something that had caught his attention since he had mentionned Michael. "Bill? I don't want to sound weird or anything - I'm, uh, not judging or anything - but...is there anything between you and Michael?" William might have very well been trying to make Mike feel better by blaming himself, but maybe there was more to it.

William propped himself up on his elbows so that a streak of moon light illuminated his face, making him look even more pale than usual. "No," he said calmly. "Michael's just a friend. I'd do the same for anyone in our band. Besides, there's someone else...," he said. Right after he had spoken, it was too late to take his words back, Mentally kicking himself for what seemed to be the millionth time that night, William felt a blush spreading across his cheeks, hoping that Mike wouldn't notice.

Mike nodded. "Good thing. It's good to have someone to care about in situations like these. Someone to fight for." He wasn't surprised to feel relief at William's answer. He didn't like the idea of William and Michael together. What was odd, however, was that he had forgotten who he was supposed to want all for himself to take care of. He closed his eyes. "Whoever it is, I hope they're on our side."

Thank god he didn't guess that it was actually him. "Yeah, he is," William spoke quietly before laying back down in the bed. He pulled the covers over himself and looked down at Mike. The guitarist wasn't asleep. It looked like he was thinking. Deciding not to intterupt whatever Mike was thinking about, William lay there and kept his eyes on the window, making sure that no one else would come for him.

"Oh yeah, and - Bill? Whatever happens, whatever I say...don't ever leave, okay? They're after you, so I want you by my side at all times. If that made sense...?" Mike opened his eyes and looked at William. He knew he was clumsy with words and actions; eventually he'd do something wrong. He didn't want William to run away at the first mistake, especially since he was hunted by an entire clan of vampires.

"Yeah, I understand." William paused for a moment. "But what if one of them did catch me? What would happen then?" he asked as he took a minute to look away from the window and back at Mike.

It suddenly occured to Mike that if they did catch William, they might be tempted to use the boy against him. "It won't happen. But in the very hypothetical guess that they might catch you, then..." Yeah, what the fuck am I going to do then? "The war will start sooner than they had planned."
