"Oh," Butcher laughed nervously at forgetting to finish his sentence. "I got attacked once. Nothing too bad."

Mikey's eyes narrowed. "Who by?" He sat up, shaking out his wings.

"Some big guys. They shoved me around a bit first and threatened to pluck all my feathers out." Butcher shuddered when he realized how much danger he had really been in.

"Human, Avian...?" Mikey raised an eyebrow, his fingers toying with the hem of his coat.

"They weren't Avian. They might have been human but I don't know they were kind of weird. Humans are usually really freaked out by wings right? They seemed like they knew," Butcher shrugged, still hovinging near Mikey's bed unsure whether to sit or not.

Mikey's lips pursed and he glared angrily at nothing. "Maybe they're part of the resistance." He shrugged. "Or maybe they were just lunatics." he rubbed his face with his hands ~~like a squirrel~~ and smiled ruefully at Butcher. "There always will be idiots like that."

"Resistance? So there is a war?" Butcher smiled back. "Idiots... I guess that's why you bought this place right?"

Mikey shrugged. "I bought this place to keep us safe. That's all I know. It... it took up all of the money I gained from 504Plan and... and most of Nick's too." He stared bleakly at the floor.

Butcher wanted to curl up next to Mikey and comfort him somehow because that's the way he was wired. He liked being close, but he didn't move. "Ah."

Mikey leant back, staring at the ceiling. "You need to fly a lot." He said, rubbing his face again. "The air gives us nutrients, keeps us well. And you're in the flock now; they wouldn't dare hurt you now you're under my protection."

Mikey looked at him. "What?" He bit his lip. "Tell." There was yelling outside and he rolled his eyes. But stayed where he was.

In response, Mikey moved his wing so Butcher would have enough space to sit down. "Is there anything else you need to know?" He asked quietly. "Anything at all? I don't mind if it's stupid."

Butcher sat and thought for a minute, "Our eyes. What about those? I can't see as well as I used to but it's like it doesn't matter."

"We're part bat." Mikey replied automatically. "So our eyesight goes from the moment we fledge, but our hearing's getting better." He picked up a mirror. "Here, you see? That second iris? Mine is thicker than yours. I'm older than you. I think that they'll film over, but I don't know."

"You seem sad," it was more of a statement than a question, and Butcher said it quietly.

Mikey stayed silent for a minute, almost as if he hadn't heard the question. Suddenly, he strode off the bed and to the chest of drawers he'd been at earlier.

"I'm sorry," Butcher sighed and pulled his knees up to his chest sensing he might have upset the other man.

Mikey opened the top drawer and carefully searched, fingers gently touching baby clothes. He pulled out a picture frame. "That's why I'm sad." He said quietly, handing it to the other man.

Butcher looked at the picture for a few moments then back up at Mikey's face. He thought his own voice sounded far away when he asked, "What happened?"

"It was before the sanctuary was formed." Mikey looked away, and took the picture back. He stared down at the little girl in the picture; the little girl and the blond teenager, and the young Mikey. "Early days fighting with Carden." He swallowed.

"Mike killed a little girl?" It didn't matter if it was the man himself or just Mike's side. Killing children was wrong no matter how Butcher looked at it.

Mikey nodded. "She was fledging. She had no pin feathers." he rubbed his eyes and coughed discreetly. "He killed Nick - that's the other boy - in front of me. And she was in the house."
