| Inspired by James Patterson's creations.
Avians are a strange, hybrid mix of creatures. No one, not least Mikey Russell, the leader of this race, knows quite where they came from.
To put it bluntly, they're a supernatural mix - one third vampire bat, one third avian and one third human. And that's the parts that Mikey thinks are right.
Avians have wings. These wings correspond with hair colour - Mikey's are a deep dark auburn. That is the most obvious way of distinguishing an Avian, but they can fold these wings back, retract them into their skin. It's how they manage to live among us now. Other characteristics are their eyes - a second iris of blood red after they have 'fledged'. From the minute they fledge, these eyes are slowly ticking down. Their eyesight will grow weaker, until, eventually, they are blind. To combat that, they have a bat's sonar hearing, which sharpens as they grow older.
Every Avian has a special talent. They just have to find it.
But, if this was all, then that would be fine. But it's not.
To feed, Avians must draw blood.

| Fledging and Morphing
'Morphing' is when a human turns into an Avian - namely, growing wings covered with a downy fluff. This will happen up to a week after getting bitten, and is extremely painful. If a human morphs in the presence of an Avian, their wings will be pulled out when they begin to show. On rare occasions, the wings will be prevented from appearing when they are blocked by shoulder blades. This is incredibly painful.
'Fledging' is the term given to the process of becoming an adult Avian. This process happens at six months and lasts three weeks. During this time, the down that covers the wings will moult, revealing bat-like wings that are red raw. The Avian's eyes will film over with red, thus rendering them temporally blind. At the end of the three weeks, an Avian's wings will be covered in strong feathers.
If an Avian loses their pin feathers, they can never fly again.

| Avians can only be killed by being shot through the heart or breaking their neck, after which you must rip the pin feathers out. Doing just one of these things is not enough, but extremely painful.
An Avian's facial hair grows extremely quickly. To keep it short, they would have to cut it once a week, and shave twice a day. It's a distinguishing feature, but unfortunately not that much.
Avians only hunt at full moon.

| Avians are not immortal. Their life span is longer than a humans, and, after reaching twenty one, ten human years is one Avian year. Therefore, they often look younger than they are.
Avian Pregnancies
Both male and female Avians can get pregnant. Avian pregnancies only last two months, with half of that pregnancy having the egg spending time outside the body. The egg must be cut out and incubated.
